2021 DISTRICT PAIRINGS
DEPARTMENT 1 in MIDLAND
Thursday March 25th
5:30 p.m. – Midland Dow versus Mount Pleasant
7pm – Midland vs. Bay City Western
Saturday March 26th
7 p.m. – championship
The winner will advance to Mount Pleasant Regional
PREDICTION: Coronavirus issues denied a third round of rivalry between Central and West. Western would like to have a positive influence on this season and cannot be considered in the matchup against Midland. But chemistry is the tournament’s favorite, and rightly so. Master: Midland
DEPARTMENT 2 at STANDISH-STERLING
Tuesday March 23rd
7 p.m. – Gladwin versus Clare
Thursday March 25th
5:30 p.m. – Remus Chippewa Hills v Ogemaw Heights
7 p.m. – Standish-Sterling versus Gladwin / Clare
Saturday March 26th
7 p.m. – championship
The winner will advance to Traverse City Central Regional
PREDICTION: Standish-Sterling v Ogemaw Heights was a marquee matchup when they first met, and they’re on their way to clash with a district championship on the line. Gladwin has the skills to come up with a surprise or two this time of year so this should be a fun draw. Champion: Standish-Sterling
DEPARTMENT 2 at ESSEXVILLE GARBER
Tuesday March 23rd
5pm – Saginaw Swan Valley vs John Glenn
7pm – Essexville Garber v Midland Bullock Creek
Thursday March 25th
5pm – Carrollton v Swan Valley / John Glenn
7pm – Freeland versus Garber / Bullock Creek
Saturday March 26th
1 p.m. – championship
The winner will advance to Owosso Regional
FORECAST: John Glenn and Garber are looking for signature wins to highlight a season of fighting, and the potential is there for both. The Bobcats and Dukes are longshots, but look for one or both to make some noise. The favorites are Freeland and Carrollton, but they should be on the alert. Master: Carrollton
DEPARTMENT 3 at LAKER
Tuesday March 23rd
7 p.m. – Laker versus Cass City
Thursday March 25th
5:30 p.m. – Unionville-Sebewaing v Harbor Beach
7 p.m. – Bad Ax versus Laker / Cass City
Saturday March 26th
7 p.m. – championship
The winner will advance to Reese Regional
PREDICTION: Harbor Beach is the overwhelming favorite after taking the “Greater Thumb East” title 13-1. But this district is ripe for something unusual to happen. Champion: Bad ax
DEPARTMENT 3 at VASSAR
Tuesday March 23rd
7 p.m. – Saginaw Arts & Sciences in Vassar
7pm – St. Charles in Saginaw Valley Lutheran
7 p.m. – Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary in Hemlock
Thursday March 25th
5:30 p.m. – Reese versus Vassar / SASA
7:30 p.m. – Valley Lutheran / St. Charles v Hemlock / MLS
Saturday March 26th
3 p.m. – championship
The winner will advance to Reese Regional
PREDICTION: A showdown is looming on the horizon. The two best seeds are on collision and course, and Reese vs. Hemlock could be epic. Both teams are built for a tournament run, but this is where it ends for one. Master: Reese
DEPARTMENT 3 in ROGERS CITY
Tuesday March 23rd
7 p.m. – Tawas versus Rogers City
Thursday March 25th
5:30 p.m. – Whittemore-Prescott v Lincoln Alcona
7 p.m. – Oscoda versus Tawas / Rogers City
Saturday March 27th
7 p.m. – championship
The winner moves to Sault Ste. Marie regional
PRELIMINARY: A year ago, history was interrupted for Oscoda, and one of the strongest teams in program history never got a chance to show what it could do after the coronavirus shutdown. It’s hard to tell if anyone or anything can stop the owls this time. Master: Oscoda
DEPARTMENT 3 in BEAVERTON
Tuesday March 23rd
5:30 p.m. – Sanford Meridian v Beal City
7 p.m. – Farwell v Harrison
Thursday March 25th
5:30 p.m. – Beaverton v Meridian / Beal City
7 p.m. – Pinconning versus Farwell / Harrison
Saturday March 26th
7 p.m. – championship
The winner will advance to Houghton Lake Regional
PREDICTION: Sanford Meridian and Pinconning have some potential in this draw. But this year it belongs to the Beavers, who won the Jack Pine Conference boys and girls’ basketball titles and may do the same with the district titles. Master: Beaverton
DEPARTMENT 3 at HOUGHTON LAKE
Tuesday March 23rd
5:30 p.m. – Roscommon v Houghton Lake
7 p.m. – Lake City v Mesick
Thursday March 25th
5:30 p.m. – McBain v Roscommon / Houghton Lake
7 p.m. – Manton v Lake City / Mesick
Saturday March 26th
Midday championship
The winner will advance to Houghton Lake Regional
PREDICTION: It’s pretty easy to draw for Roscommon. The Bucks are a group of undersized gamblers who compete with big hearts. But there’s something in the water at McBain. Anyone who plays a basketball in this city knows how to win. Master: McBain
DEPARTMENT 4 at UBLY
Tuesday March 23rd
5:30 p.m. – Owendale-Gagetown versus Carsonville-Port Sanilac
7 p.m. – Caseville versus Deckerville
Thursday March 25th
5:30 p.m. – Ubly versus OwenGage / CPS
7pm – Kinde North Huron v Caseville / Deckerville
Saturday March 26th
7 p.m. – championship
The winner will advance to Midland Regional
PREDICTION: Let’s call it the overall championship of the Greater Thumb Conference. GTW Champion North Huron and GTE Champion Ubly face a showdown. Master: Ubly
DEPARTMENT 4 at AKRON-FAIRGROVE
Tuesday March 23rd
5:30 p.m. Mayville v Akron-Fairgrove
7pm – Ashley v Bay City All Saints
Thursday March 25th
5:30 p.m. – Midland Calvary Baptist v Mayville / Akron-Fairgrove
7 p.m. – Saginaw Nouvel versus Ashley / All Saints
Saturday March 26th
7 p.m. – championship
The winner will advance to Midland Regional
PREDICTION: All Saints would be a Cinderella story if it could run to the crown after being idle since March 12th. But the Nouvel girls are likely to have a long tournament run and the boys don’t want to be left behind. Master: Nouvel
DEPARTMENT 4 at AU GRES
Thursday March 25th
5:30 p.m. – St. Helen Heston versus Au Gres
7 p.m. – Hale vs. Atlanta
Saturday March 26th
7 p.m. – championship
The winner will advance to Midland Regional
PREDICTION: Hale was stopped short of his lofty goals last season by the coronavirus break. Notably, the Eagles have started exactly where they left off – despite the completion of all-time all-time top scorer Joseph Kimmerer – and once again have the ambitions of a district championship. Master: Hale
