14-0 East Lansing girls dominate over Haslett

DEWITT, me. (WILX) – The pressure was high tonight. Haslett wanted another win and East Lansing wanted to continue a perfect season. The Trojans did just that 14-0, won the district final and made their way to the regional ones.

“We don’t have these all-American kids. Together they define a team, ”said Rob Smith, East Lansing head coach. “There are 8 girls on this team on any given night that can score double digits and that’s what makes it amazing and tonight you saw some of our regulars were absent.”

So it was time for others to step up. It was Junior Payton Baker who came out of the bank.

“I was very nervous, but I was working super hard so I knew my time was coming soon,” said Baker. “I wasn’t afraid to take my shots that I had to take.”

It didn’t show up with 17 total points and most of them from sales.

“21 years … this girl is the best improved basketball player in a year. If you go back and look at her stats over the past year, she didn’t shoot and she didn’t play that much in the sophomore, ”said Smith. “She saves us sometimes. She’s the shot in the arm that this program needs right now. “

Losing 6-0 in the first few minutes was the spark that Baker and the team needed to advance defensively. This was a big part of this game and a big reason they keep going.

“What’s special is that you buy your team more time together,” said Smith. “That is the most valuable thing I have right now, that I can see these young women for another week.”

East Lansing will play Jackson Northwest at Richland Gull Lake High School in the regional semifinals this Monday, March 29th at 5:30 pm.
