‘Root ball’ causes 600 gallons of sewage overflow in the arboretum on Monday

ANN ARBOR, me. – A “root ball” blocked a pipe Monday morning, causing an estimated 600 gallons of sanitary sewer to overflow in part of the University of Michigan’s Nichols Arboretum, the city of Ann Arbor said.

Employees from the City of Ann Arbor Public Works Department responded to the incident, finding that the clogging was causing sewage to spill onto the surface of the ground. The staff covered the affected area with lime to neutralize bacteria. It was cordoned off with tape and marked with signs.

No sewage reached a watercourse or storm sewer, the city said in a message.

City officials notified the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy in accordance with legal protocols.
