Riverside Marina offers outdoor space so Detroit high school students can celebrate prom

The Detroit Marina has outdoor event space for high school proms

Detroit High Schools have the option of holding their Proms in Riverside Marina.

COVID-19 derails many plans, including high school dancing.

Riverside Marina wants to make sure students can celebrate their prom by opening their outdoor area to Detroit schools to hold the dances.

“We’d talked about prom every three years before. We were ready and couldn’t leave. It was really sad,” said Sa-Mya Williams.

Williams graduated in 2020. Like most students who graduated from high school during the pandemic, she missed prom.

Brianna McQuire, a senior at Cass Tech, said she thinks all of the celebrations last year have been canceled.

“We haven’t been able to have homecoming or encouragement, you know, things we’ve seen in other seniors because of the circumstances,” she said.

All events have not been canceled, however, as Cass Tech is one of five schools that have already signed up for a prom at the marina.

Marina on the river in Detroit

Any Detroit high school that wants to host a prom at the marina has the opportunity this year. And don’t be surprised if you see a guest or two from the 2020 class at the prom

“We wanted to make sure they had this opportunity if they wanted,” said Alicia White, event manager at Riverside Marina.

White said the marina is looking for sponsors to offset the cost of hosting the events.

“These are costs that we want to minimize for our schools, so we need support in this regard. That’s why we ask for support from the community,” White said. “It could be a family, a business, an individual, it could be a company – anyone with a heart for these children.”

Sponsorships range from hundreds of dollars to thousands.
