Powers Catholic hockey team in state semifinals after beating Grand Rapids CC 3-1

The Powers Catholic ice hockey team is one win away from the eleventh final round of ice hockey.

Mason Czarnecki, Cooper Gerhardt and Trey Carlock scored a goal for Powers while Nick Kurtiak scored 19 saves in Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Grand Rapids Catholic Central at Munn Arena in East Lansing.

The Chargers (16-3) will play Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood (13-4) in the Division 3 semi-finals at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth on Friday at 10 a.m. Cranbrook-Kingswood defeated Detroit UD-Jesuit 1-0 in another quarter-finals.

The winner will advance to the title game on Saturday at 3pm.

Powers is voted 5th in Division 3 and Cranbrook Kingswood 4th by the coaches.

Powers is in the semifinals for the first time since 2010 when the Chargers lost 3-1 to Cranbrook Kingswood in the state championship game. That was their third final in six years.
