Online activity appalling | Information, Sports activities, Jobs
To the journal editor:
I recently read an article in the April 24th issue of The Traverse City Record-Eagle entitled “HATE-CHAT: Students from the region hold a mock slave auction and spit out racist rhetoric online.”
I am a Michigander colleague who lives on the upper peninsula and is utterly disgusted and appalled at the behavior of these students. Most of the time, however, I’m scared. Is that how children are raised today? Where do you learn that this behavior is okay?
I look at the parents. This is wrong on so many levels. I can tell you, Mrs Wharton, that there are people who are deeply affected by this behavior, and thank you for speaking up.
These students should undoubtedly be punished. Shame on everyone who attended this gross, despicable online event.
I’ve always enjoyed visiting Traverse City but will think twice about it in the future. Any community that raises children with this kind of ignorance and hatred is not a community that I want to be a part of.
