NC Department of Transportation officials have reassessed recent speed limit changes on NC 194 between Lansing and the Virginia state line in Ashe County.

NCDOT crews will be putting up new speed limit signs as well as additional new warning signs next week.

The new speed limit from Lansing City Line to Helton Road is 45 MPH, from Helton Road to Ball Hallow Road 35 MPH, and from Ball Hallow Road to Virginia State Line is 45 MPH.

These changes are the result of a closer examination of NC 194 after changing it to 35 mph for every nine miles earlier this spring. The combination of the crash rate and the new cornering guidelines in the Uniform Traffic Control Device Manual – the technical standard for road signage – required NCDOT officials to review a nine-mile section of NC 194 that was previously covered with a Speed of 55 mph had not been posted limit per state law.

The two-lane highway includes sections of varying shoulder widths, sharp turns for which a maximum speed of 35 km / h is appropriate, and other straight sections for which a speed limit of 45 km / h is appropriate, based on MUTCD standards.

Transport officials are using the new speed limits to reduce the accident rate, increase general road safety, while maintaining reasonable travel times for citizens.
