MSU’s Suzy Merchant collects 500th career win

Michigan state basketball coach Suzy Merchant took her 500th career win as head coach when the Spartans beat Valparaiso (73:62) at the Breslin Center on Tuesday night.

The saleswoman, who began her career in Saginaw Valley State before moving to Eastern Michigan, is 500-277 years old, 299-157 in Michigan State. This is the 15th season for the Spartans.

The Spartans started 3-0 for the seventh time in a row.

The players, coaches and Sparty put on an impromptu party for Merchant after the game.

“One thing I’m going to say is get all 500. I’m really blessed to have all of my 500 from the state of Michigan, which I come from, and that doesn’t happen very often in our business,” said Kaufmann , a native of Traverse City. “To do this here in Michigan State, I am blessed and grateful for this opportunity to stand here.”

Senior guard Nia Clouden had 18 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, while striker Tamara Farquhar had 12 points and 19 rebounds. Junior guard Alyza Winston scored 17 points and new signing Matilda Ekh had 11 points.

Grace White had 22 points and Shay Frederick 15 for Valparaiso (0-3).

Michigan State is next to play Bryant at home on Friday before embarking on a three-game road trip.

(At) No. 13 Michigan 73, UMass-Lowell 54: Four Wolverines scored double digits, led by senior striker Naz Hillmon who scored 19. Junior Guard Maddie Nolan scored 18, with six 3-pointers.

Senior striker Emily Kiser had 13 points and 11 rebounds, and senior guard Danielle Rauch scored 10.

Michigan (3-0) plays in Central Michigan on Saturday.

UMass-Lowell is 1-2.
