Moped driver dies in crash with school bus driver at Dearborn-Detroit border

A fatal crash between a moped and a school bus occurred Wednesday night on the Detroit-Dearborn border. The tragedy was captured by surveillance cameras.

It happened around 3 p.m. on the corner of Tireman and Oakman.

Even after braking, the bus continued to drive through the intersection. The moped the victim was driving was jammed under the bus.

“There was a school bus going east on Tireman and the moped going south on Oakman and it didn’t stop completely at the stop and it ran over it,” said Zeinab Elhadi, a witness.

The crash and what happened after it was captured by surveillance cameras.

“It was too late for him to move or stop. He was rammed, it happened so quickly,” said Elhadi.

The surveillance camera of a nearby Dearborn house recorded the tragic crash.

Without hesitation, Elhadi, a nursing student, rushed over to help.

“I ran over to him and checked his pulse,” she said. “I called 911. They told me to start compressing him. So I tried CPR.”

When the police arrived, they continued their life-saving efforts until witnesses said others had come to help.

“EMS and the fire department tried to revive him, but there was no life left in him,” said Cheryl Young, a witness.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

An intersection in Oakman and Tireman has a history of crashes, local residents say.

“He’s someone’s father, uncle, brother, you know,” said Young. “And that’s the sad part.”
