NS. PAUL, Minnesota – The NHL Free Agency phase began early Wednesday and the Minnesota Wild were expected to be very active in their quest to build a Stanley Cup contender. And one of the signings on Wednesday has some local connections.

Grand Rapids-born Alex Goligoski has signed a $ 5 million one-year deal with the Wild. The veteran defender has spent the past five years with the Arizona Coyotes and looks forward to returning home.

“I was just looking out there, my cell phone is just going crazy. Lots of friends and family get in touch. My family is excited. I’m sure they will try to get a lot of games and it’s pretty cool, ”said Goligoski.

Goligoski added that part of his decision to sign with the Wild was that he wanted to play hockey and join a team with a very bright future.

“I’ve played against the wild a lot in my career. Last year they gave it to us pretty well and I really liked their team last year. I saw the whole series against Vegas. All along I thought they were going to win this series, and I thought they probably should. Just really impressive so I think it’s a great fit and I’m really excited, ”said Goligoski.

Goligoski turns 36 on Friday as he starts his 15th season in the NHL.
