Metro Detroit climate: Snow continues Sunday morning

DETROIT – A winter weather warning is in effect for southeast Michigan through 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.

The New Year continues to roar like a lion, with the snowstorm on New Year’s weekend this morning. It’s snowy and icy out there, and a healthy amount of snow will fall by mid-morning. The air is much colder.

Moderate to heavy snowfall continues in southeast Michigan, especially before sunrise. It gets seasonally cold with temperatures starting in your lower 20s.

Before dawn, at least 2-4 inches of snow will have fallen in some parts of southeast Michigan, from Lenawee and Monroe counties well into the Thumb.

The snow will rejuvenate and become lighter between 8am and 10am. During this time, an additional 1 to 2 inches of snow is expected.

The total amount of snow for the New Years Storm will be between 3-6 inches.


On Sunday afternoons it will be mostly cloudy and cold. Temperatures will fluctuate in the mid-20s. Remember, road workers have a huge role to play when driving a car.

On Sunday evening, the coldest air of the season subsides. It’s getting colder with temperatures touching teens after sunset and before midnight.

On Sunday night it will be partly cloudy and very cold. The overnight lows will be in the lower tens. Wind chills will be in the single digits to close to zero degrees. Students must dress in shifts, especially at the morning bus stop when they go back to school.
