Man who fired gun in Grand Rapids bar, injuring one, gets prison sentence

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A 40-year-old man who police say fired a handgun in a Grand Rapids bar, injuring a man, has been sentenced to a minimum four years in prison.

Robert Louis Walton was sentenced Wednesday, July 13 on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, carless discharge of a firearm causing injury and felony firearm.

Walton was at the Metro Bar, on South Division Avenue near Burton Street, on Dec. 28, 2019 when he fired the gun.

According to Kent County prosecutors, Walton has said he was punched by a security guard, causing an accidental discharge of the gun.

The victim was simply a bystander. The victim’s mother spoke at Wednesday’s sentencing, prosecutors said, and described how her son was an accountant who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
