Man convicted in US $ 400,000 nationwide stamp program in Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – A man was sentenced to six years and six months in federal prison in Tampa for a US $ 400,000 statewide postmarking system.
Court records show that 49-year-old Edward Morgan was sentenced in federal court in Tampa on Wednesday. He pleaded guilty to stealing government funds in September 2019.
As part of his sentence, Morgan has to repay $ 405,935.76, the proceeds of the theft.
From November 2016 until his arrest in New Mexico in May 2019, prosecutors used fictitious checks to buy postage at hundreds of U.S. post offices in Florida and other states, according to Morgan.
Prosecutors said Morgan resold the stamps to unsuspecting third parties, usually corporations or stamp dealers.
