Heavy rain causes more flooding on Detroit-area freeways

SOUTHFIELD, Michigan (AP) – Flash food warnings were issued in the Detroit area after another heavy rain. The Michigan Department of Transportation says portions of four highways were closed due to flooding early Friday afternoon. Both directions of the Lodge Freeway near 10 Mile Road in Southfield appeared to be under 1 to 2 feet of water, causing some motorists to get off the freeway by going up the access ramps in the wrong direction. The National Weather Service says parts of southeast Michigan could experience rainfall rates in excess of an inch an hour. A storm in late June dropped more than six inches of rain over Detroit and three suburban communities. Thousands of cellars and dozens of streets were flooded.
