Five Grand Rapids girls golf teams win regional championships
Regional golf tournaments began Monday and will continue through Thursday, and so far the Grand Rapids area teams are thriving.
Five teams won the regional championships, while two more were placed in the top three to qualify for the state as well.
The State Finals will be played October 15-16, with the Division 1 Championship being played at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University, Division 2 at Bedford Valley at Battle Creek, and Divisions 3 and 4 at Michigan State University .

Rockford shot a 347 in the Regionalliga on Monday at Betsie Valley Golf Course in Thompsonville, beating Traverse City (366) and Grand Haven (393). The Rams had four golfers in the top 10, with Jessica Jolly finishing second in her sophomore year with a 79. Bridget Parlmer fourth (85), Aubrey Wilson sixth (91) and Mackenzie Davidson ninth (92). Rockford’s Marley Haeberle took 11th place (93).
Elise Fennell was a sophomore at East Kentwood with a 73 medalist and qualified as an individual for the state finals. Ainslee Hewitt from Traverse City West, 87, and Ella Thomasma, 92, from Hudsonville also qualified as individuals.
Byron Center shot a 339 for top honors on the Island Hills Golf Course, knocking out runner-up Battle Creek Lakeview by eight. Gull Lake finished third with a 355. Second year Macie Elzinga and senior Pia Ficek led the Bulldogs. Elzinga shot a 76 to tie Portage Northern’s KT canvas for the medal award, while Ficek finished third, one stroke behind. Jayda Kerns finished 17th for Byron Center (91) and Jenna Wallace 26th (95). Canvas, Taylor Musselman (78) from Coldwater and Rylee Smith (80) from Zeeland West all qualified for the state.
Forest Hills Eastern had three golfers in the top 11 when they won the Cadillac Country Club. The Hawks posted a 368 to oust Whitehall (373) and Spring Lake (377) for the top honors. Sophomore Sophie Skoog and senior Eliza Daniels cracked the top five for FHE, with Skoog finishing second at 85 and Daniels fifth (90). Phaedra Melinn (94) and Bella Chiodini (99) from FHE took 11th and 23rd place respectively. Ludingtons Emma McKinley (86), Grants Nadia Zerlaut (88) and Kiali Stout (90) from Big Rapids also came to the state. Whitehall’s Karli Vanduinen posted a 77 for medalists.
South Christian shot a 341 and won the Regionalliga on Pigeon Creek Golf Course with 22 strokes from Catholic Central (363), while Grand Rapids Christian (371) finished third. The Sailors finished in the top 13 with five golfers, including runner-up Ashley Thomasma, who was ahead with a 79, and Elle Bolkema, who was fifth (83rd). Samantha Helder (89) was 10th, Natalie Northouse (90) 11th and Lucy Dehaan (93) 13th. Christian’s Sara Muir scored 78, which was the best in the field. Holland Christians Ainsley Vandenbrink (81), Allegans Macarena Serratosa Garcia (85) and Allegans Zoe Bronkema (88) qualified as lone fighters.
Calvin Christian qualified for the state after finishing second behind Kalamazoo Christian 394-400 in the regional league at Milham Park Golf Course. Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Prep finished third (412). Calvin Christian’s Andrea Diemer was regional medalist with an 88, while her teammates Sydney Vandenbos (99), Melissa Scholten (103) and Selah Teusink finished 11th, 18th and 27th. NorthPointe Christian’s Kayla Collins is on her way to the state after the newbie shot second place behind Diemer with an 89.
