Families living without water, warmth, elevators in Detroit apartment building reach out for help

DETROIT – People who live in an apartment complex on Porter Street in Detroit turned to Help Me Hank after living without water, heating, or elevators.

They were caught in the middle of a legal tug of war when ownership of the building was surrendered in court. The tenants have no running water, they use space heaters for heating, and they live in appalling conditions.

Resident Cherylynn Rinehart said she cannot use the stairs and has been stuck in her apartment for weeks. Like many other tenants, she lives in the apartment with her child. There are around 15 families struggling with the dire conditions.

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department had a team on site and found that the water was never turned off. They believe someone in the building turned it off.
