East Grand Rapids Boys Win Michigan D3 Title, Dobrzanski Smashes 100 BR Record

After finishing second in 2019, East Grand Rapids took the Michigan D3 State 2021 title yesterday, almost 90 points ahead of defending champion Holland Christian. This is the 26th East Grand Rapids title in program history.

East Grand Rapids did not win any swimming competitions, but used the team depth to win the state championship. At least one swimmer reached the top 5 in almost every competition. Her divers were also very successful Charley Bayer (490.75) and Billy Kirchgessner (472.90) went 1-2.

Milan junior Andrew Dobrzanski was one of two double winners yesterday as he was 1: 50.07 in the 200 IM and 54.67 in the 100 chest. Dobrzanski has made gigantic improvements this season, standing at 56.24 in the chest and 1: 52.17 in the IM. He was also anchored 45.42 on their 400 free season and 25.18 floating chest on their medley season.

Dobrzanski’s 100 chest time was a D3 state record of over a second.

Holland Christians Colin Kalkman was the other double winner and went free with 45.72 in the 100 and 50.96 back in the 100. Kalkman supplanted Detroit Country Day Jacob Ryan (45.92) in Free and Pinckney Tyler Ray (51.09) in the back. Ryan won the 50 free (20.58) and Ray the 100 flies (49.23).

Kalkman was also 45.16 to anchor Holland Christian in the 400 series title.


  • Spencer Boling-Hamer von Trenton took the 200 free in 1: 42.21.
  • Masons Jonas Cantrell posted a 4: 27.58 to win the 500 for free. At the next event, he anchored Mason’s 200 free seasons in a state championship title (20.42) when they went 1: 26.52.
  • Cranbrook Kingswood took the 200 medley season in 1: 34.97 in the sophomore year Ethan Schwab was 24.65 on the sternum, a large split. Schwab came second in the 500 free breasts (4: 35.14) and 100 breasts (55.46), both lifelong best performances, as he was also below the old D3 record in the chest.
