Detroit Lions vs. New York Jets Prediction, Preview, and Odds

Detroit will be looking to extend its two-game winning streak when it travels to New York on Sunday afternoon. The Lions have won five of their last six games, opening up an opportunity to make the playoffs. New York has been trending in the opposite direction, losing three of its last four games.

Goff leads high-powered Detroit offense

Detroit got off to a terrible start this season, losing six of its first seven games. The Lions lost four of those games by four points or less, and they have been on the right side of the variance since then. They have won five of their last six games, with the lone loss coming against Buffalo on Thanksgiving. This is the first time that Detroit has won five games in a six-game stretch since winning five straight under former coach Jim Caldwell in 2016, which was the last time that the franchise made the playoffs. The Lions can now win six of seven for the first time since 2014.

Their offense has been fantastic of late, matching a team record by scoring 25 or more points in five straight games for the first time since 1954. They have also scored 30-plus points in four of their last five games. Quarterback Jared Goff has thrown for 330-plus yards in each of his last two games, resulting in a 40-14 win over Jacksonville and a 34-23 win against Minnesota. He has completed 65.3% of his passes for 3,352 yards, 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions overall this season. Goff wrapped up a three-game homestand with 910 passing yards, seven touchdowns and zero picks. The Lions have moved up to fourth in the NFL offensively, averaging 376.4 yards per game—they are facing a New York defense that is No. 3, allowing 301.2 yards per game.

Wilson to get the start for Jets

New York has been in a rough patch of late, but it still has an opportunity to put together a special season as well. The Jets went 7-4 through their first 11 games, beating Buffalo, Green Bay and Miami during that stretch. They have lost two straight games since then, falling to Minnesota and Buffalo in a pair of one-score games. The Jets have a somewhat favorable schedule to close the regular season, as they will face the Jaguars, Seahawks and Dolphins in their final three games. They are trying to snap an 11-year postseason drought, which is the longest active skid in the NFL.

The Jets dropped from the seventh spot in the AFC playoff picture to the outside looking in following their loss to Buffalo last week. Quarterback Mike White is out with a rib injury, so Zach Wilson will be back under center for this game. White had completed 62.0% of his passes for 952 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in his three games. Rookie running back Breece Hall went down with a season-ending knee injury in late October, but rookie Zonovan Knight has rushed for at least 69 yards in three straight games. The Jets are No. 19 in the NFL offensively (336.8 ypg) and are facing a Detroit defense that is No. 31 (403.2ypg).

This is not a matchup that NFL fans would have circled on their calendars heading into the season, but it is going to be an electric atmosphere on Sunday. I would rather fade the Jets than the Lions right now, especially with some of the injury issues that New York is dealing with, most notably to White, who is out for this game. Detroit’s offense has been among the best in the NFL all year, and the Lions have gotten even better of late. They have covered the spread in six straight games and are the pick to cover the number on Sunday.

Prediction: Detroit +1

Detroit’s winning ways have been correlated with their games going over the betting total, as they rely completely on their offense to win games. They have gone over the total in four of their last five games, as Goff leads an attack that is among the best in the NFL, while their defense is second worst in the league. New York has proven its ability to put up points this season as well, and Hall’s injury has not been too much of an issue. The Jets and Lions have gone over the total in four of their last five meetings.

Prediction: Over 43.5
