The Beecher community gathers around the basketball team and donates the entire trip to East Lansing for the semifinals
BEECHER, me. (WYRT) – (04/07/2021) – Two boys basketball teams from the Flint area are playing to stamp their tickets for Saturday’s state championship game.
Before that, however, they have to survive the semi-finals in East Lansing on Thursday.
One of these teams is Beecher, who is back in the semi-finals for the first time since 2017.
On Wednesday night, they got on the team bus that drove to East Lansing for the Thursday morning game and the community makes them smile a lot.
It started with a late night Facebook post on Tuesday. Sports director’s secretary Trayc Cunningham asked Buctown who might be ready to fuel the Beecher Boys as they prepare for a run at the state championship.
“Went to bed. When I woke up, my phone exploded and I said, ‘What’s wrong?” And it was just donations, “said Cunningham.
Her entire trip to East Lansing was donated and paid for, from hotel rooms to Thursday morning breakfast, and before they even got there, donations came in from alumni in the 1976 class through the 2009 class even bratwurst fresh from the grill.
Cunningham made snack bags for each athlete containing treats such as gatorade, oreos, and fruits.
“To see that they are loved. That people are watching them. That people care for them and have the support of their teachers, their community, their administrators. They have so much support that they want to win this over to the community, ”said Cunningham.
Junior Carmelo Harris agrees and says, “It gives us hope. That is, we have supporters who actually believe in what we do and actually want to get involved in what we do and invest in us. “
Head coach Mike Williams says it shows what it’s about and not just in Beecher.
He wishes the best of luck to Grand Blanc, who is also playing in the D1 semi-finals.
“It’s the Flint area that took us and they put their arms around us. I hope we both collect a trophy for this area for this city for this townspeople who went through so many difficult times, ”said Williams.
Beecher’s semi-final game against Hannover-Horton will take place at 10:00 a.m. in the Breslin Center in East Lansing.
