Some Serious Funny Business in Traverse City

Audiences in Traverse City will be getting a chance to enjoy some pretty famous comedians live and in-person, when the first Traverse City Comedy Festival presented by the Downtown Traverse City Association, kicks off February 2nd-4th, in a new festival spread across five venues in the downtown area.

Writer Joe Beyer says with 20 ticketed events featuring over 40 national, regional, and local comedians, there is sure to be someone, somewhere, who will make you laugh. With headliners from the world of television specials, late night appearances, and hit podcasts (Tom Papa, Maria Bamford, Dean Edwards, ISMO and Jackie Kashian among many notable others), events will be held at the City Opera House, Traverse City Comedy Club , Encore 201, The Workshop Brewing Company, and Hotel Indigo.

With flinty performers from a range of diverse styles, backgrounds and talents – the festival is showcasing the unique power of comedy to bring people together, and Beyer says that’s the point: even though comedy is a dangerous occupation these days, it’s also the one ring where culture, politics and social commentary all still mix together.

Also notable, this version of the comedy festival has invited key locals from the stand-up, open-mic and improv circuit to be a part of putting on the event – and showcases Michigan talent side by side with famous touring artists.

Inspired by the former Winter Comedy Festival run by the Traverse City Film Festival until shuttering in 2015, this version is offering opportunities for those interested in writing or performing comedy to honor their craft, alongside workshops and other special events.
