One still missing after boat capsizes in Lake Michigan

(WILX) – The search for a missing boat driver on Lake Michigan continues. The Coast Guard was called to the Indiana port south of Chicago on Saturday afternoon after an 18-foot Bayliner runabout capsized.

Three people wearing life jackets were pulled out of the water after a boat capsized. A fourth boater, 20 year old Kelvin Soto Crespo from Puerto Rico, has not yet been found. Officials say this person was not wearing a life jacket.

Strong winds over the weekend have restricted the possibilities of the rescue workers.

“Wind conditions make this extremely difficult,” said Alex Neel, a conservation officer for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. “The waves go 8 to 10 feet, so it’s extremely difficult to maintain a search pattern in those waves.”

A Traverse City Coast Guard helicopter was called in to assist the search.

“It’s not something we want to look into at any point, especially May 1st. So that’s earlier than what we normally see and it’s definitely something that hopefully won’t keep the summer going,” said Neel.

The Coast Guard says two of the boaters have been treated for hypothermia and the third is in critical condition.
