New cancer diagnosis and treatment technology in Grand Rapids

Governor Gretchen Whitmer and others got their first look at the $ 65 million facility Monday afternoon, which is slated to open next June and take in new patients.

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan – A multi-million dollar medical facility is coming soon to Grand Rapids. When it opens next year, the Bold Advanced Medical Future (BAMF Health) center will bring new technologies for cancer diagnosis and treatment to the medical mile.

The team says it is ready to join the other health systems there to offer another solution in the fight against cancer and other diseases, and they say it is starting to collect information about their patients in new ways.

“We see ourselves as a community resource,” says Dr. Anthony Chang, CEO and President of BAMF Health. “Several lives will be saved here. International scientists will come here to learn and medical patients will come here for treatment.”

Governor Gretchen Whitmer and others got their first glimpse of the $ 65 million facility, which is slated to open next June and to accept new patients.

The health system offers new ways to identify and treat cancer and other diseases. The team uses molecular imaging to make a diagnosis and then uses molecular targeted radiation therapy to treat the patient.

“This is a very, very powerful tool to address these issues,” says Dr. Chang. “We have very limited damage to the surrounding tissue. Normally we will not see any side effects compared to the traditional method.”

The facility is also set to bring 200 jobs to the community, and Governor Whitmer says she looks forward to the addition to strengthen both the state’s economy and health care system.

“I hope we’ve learned in the past year and a half that our public health is inextricably linked to our economic health, and this is an example of where we can do good on both fronts,” she says. “These things work from one another, and we will continue to see growth in this area here. It’s not just about growing our economy, it’s about saving lives.”

The center is being built in partnership with Michigan State University, and while BAMF Health will be the main tenant when construction is completed next year, other health systems such as Spectrum Health will also be located there.
