Mystery water leak trapping elderly woman inside Detroit home

DETROIT – The house of an 88-year-old Detroit woman is surrounded by floods.

Several houses in the Joy Road and Grand River Avenue area are surrounded by water. However, the city could not find the source of the leak.

“The aqueduct was built around 1917. We know where the sewers are, we know where the water pipe is, but unfortunately we don’t know where that 32-inch pipe is, ”said Sam Smalley, COO of Detroit Water and Sewerage Division.

City officials are unsure where the pipe is leaking as they have no membranes.

“We’re bringing out some sensitive acoustic detection devices that will allow us to listen to the water from several different locations and then triangulate where that sound is coming from,” said Smalley.
