‘My abortion is none of your business’  ⋆

With a month until Election Day, state Rep. Julie Brixie (D-Meridian Twp.) joined more than 100 people on the Capitol steps rallying in support of abortion rights and more pro-choice women in politics.

The event at the Capitol was one of more than 415 “Women’s Wave” rallies organized by the Women’s March slated across the country including events planned in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, Kalamazoo and Marquette.

Some attendees carried signs encouraging voters to support Proposal 3, which would enshrine reproductive rights in the state Constitution. As the crowd gathered, a plane with a banner reading, “Vote anti-abortion” circled the sky above.

Organizers were joined by student groups and organizations including: Helping Women Period, Voters Not Politicians, Reproductive Freedom For All, Empowering Women in Law MSU and the Michigan Democratic Party supported by Democratic student organizations.

Brixie, who is up for reelection against Republican Norm Shinkle, said her constituents have shared personal stories about experiences with abortion alongside their concerns and fears.

“For nearly 50 years, we’ve had the right to privacy and the freedom to decide whether and when to have children,” said Brixie, who has three children. “Unlike other countries, our government didn’t limit how many children were allowed to have, or didn’t force us to have children you didn’t want.”

“We had a right to privacy and that privacy extended into our doctor’s office … but now suddenly, this has been changed. Our privacy has been stripped away. Politicians are deciding your medical future,” Brixie said.

Brixie brought up her own abortion story to argue for medical privacy.

“I haven’t shared my story before. You haven’t read about it in the newspaper, I haven’t talked about it on the House floor. … My abortion is none of your business,” Brixie said.

“I’m a state representative, a politician. Your abortion is none of my business,” Brixie said.

After Brixie’s speech, the attendees marched through downtown Lansing.
