Michigan vs. Michigan State Football in 2022 moved to Ann Arbor

Michigan Football will host Michigan State in 2022 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, the Big Ten Conference told the Free Press on Saturday night. The date is unknown.

The game was originally scheduled to take place in East Lansing, and both schools’ websites are still listing the game for October 22nd at Spartan Stadium. But that won’t be the case.

The Big Ten will release a new schedule for 2022 after this season. As a reference, the 2021 schedule was completed in the first week of February 2021.

EPOS:Kenneth Walker III, Mel Tucker and the guts of MSU prevail against Michigan in the classic

REACTION:How bad is this loss for Michigan and Jim Harbaugh?

So why the change?

It goes back to the 2020 season and the pure conference schedule that was played due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Locations have changed for six Big Ten Division games, including two with MSU (in Michigan versus Indiana) and two with Michigan (against MSU in Indiana).

The rotation of these games in future seasons has been reset based on the 2020 location.

As such, MSU hosted Michigan and visited Indiana in 2021 and will now visit Michigan and host Indiana in 2022.

Michigan welcomes Indiana next week and will face the Hoosiers on the streets next year.

The change is beneficial for both the Spartans and Wolverines as it loosens the schedule by dividing the two annual marquee division games between home and street.

MSU had played the Wolverines and Ohio State Buckeyes on the streets in odd years and at home in even years. Meanwhile, Michigan played the Spartans and Buckeyes on the streets in even years and at home in odd years.

MSU is now home to Michigan and visits the state of Ohio in odd years; Michigan visits MSU and hosts the Buckeyes in odd years.

The Paul Bunyan Trophy resides in East Lansing for one more season after the Spartans scored a 37:33 win over the Wolverines in the second half at Spartan Stadium on Saturday. Kenneth Walker III scored five touchdowns and Charles Brantley’s jumping intercept sealed the win. MSU (8-0, 5-0 Big Ten) is one of five Power 5 schools that are still undefeated after beating Michigan (7-1, 4-1).

The Spartans have won 10 of their last 14 games in the rivalry and are 2-0 under Mel Tucker. He is the only MSU coach who has ever won his first two matchups against “this school in the future”.

MSU won as a 24½-point underdog, 27-24 in Michigan in 2020 before a Michigan stadium was stripped of fans due to COVID-19.
