Manistee County assault alleged by a Traverse City woman

CLEON TWP. – A number of first response agencies were called to Cleon Township Tuesday morning for a report of a woman who allegedly being assaulted with a shovel by her husband.

The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office reported in a news release on Tuesday that deputies were called to the Simpson Road area near Litzen Road northeast of Copemish for a report of a domestic incident in progress.

The caller said she had been assaulted with a shovel by her husband and that she was running through the woods to escape him.

“The suspect also fled into the woods prior to the arrival of deputies,” the release states. “Responding law enforcement units established a perimeter and K-9 track was initiated by a Michigan State Police K-9 unit. The MSP K-9 unit was able to locate the suspect in the woods. He was taken into custody without incident.”

The woman, 40, of Traverse City, sustained nonlife-threatening injuries during the incident.

The man, a 38-year-old Interlochen resident, was transported to the Manistee County Jail.

The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Michigan State Police, the Benzie County Sheriff’s Office, Mobile Medical Response EMS, Benzie County EMS and Manistee County Central Dispatch.

The release stated that no additional details were available as of Tuesday afternoon.
