Ila Mae Proud, 83, formerly of Buchanan, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at her home in Granger.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held Saturday, June 25, 2022 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at Swem Chapel, 301 W. Front St., Buchanan. Those wishing to sign Mae’s Memory Book online may do so at www.swemchapel.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of McCoy’s Creek Trail in Buchanan.

Mae was born December 20, 1938 in Ettiwa, Arkansas to James & Nancy (Brawner) Hanback. Her family moved to Buchanan during her junior year, and it was at Buchanan High where she met her future husband Richard Proud, when they were accidentally assigned the same locker. They graduated Class of 1956 and they were married June 25, 1960 at the First Presbyterian Church in Buchanan. Mae dedicated her time to her family, but in addition, worked outside the home, first as co-owner with Dick of Proud’s General Store in Buchanan, followed by Clark Credit Corporation, and finally retiring from Dr. Park’s Family Medical in Buchanan after many years of service.

Mae served as a Brownie leader when her daughter was active, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Buchanan Bridge Club, The Buchanan Garden Club (past-president) and The Thirty Club (past president), and served the Downtown Development Association in Buchanan. She and Dick were co-founders and members of Friends of McCoy’s Creek Trail. Mae enjoyed flower gardening, golfing and bird watching. She was an avid Notre Dame fan, her favorite being the women’s basketball team. Mae also enjoyed decorating, especially for the Christmas season.

Mae is survived by her husband Richard “Dick” Proud; her children-Carol (Tom) Saladin and Joel (Jennifer) Proud, both of Buchanan; seven grandchildren—Chelsea (Matthew) Paskell, Parker (Sidney Weaver) Saladin, Trayton Saladin, Triana (Ian Hafer) Proud, Jack Proud, Logan Proud and Ian Proud; her great-granddaughter Quinn Ila Mae Paskell; and her sister-in-law Joanne (John D.) Schultz of Traverse City, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings-Ann Doris Sorget & Alton Ray Hanback.
