IBM Watson Health names St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and Chelsea Hospitals in the Top 100

ANN ARBOR, me. – St. Joseph Ann Arbor was once again placed on IBM Watson Health’s annual list of the 100 Best Hospitals along with its sister hospital in Chelsea.

The list has recognized high-performing hospitals and healthcare systems in the United States for 26 years.

“100 winners from the top hospitals consistently set industry benchmarks for measures such as 30-day readmission, death rate and patient experience,” said IBM Watson Health in its report.

That year, St. Joe’s Ann Arbor was named No. 3 in the Top 15 Teaching Hospitals category. It has made it onto the top 100 list a total of 12 times after being cut in 2020, 2019, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2009, 1999 and 1996, the hospital said in a press release.

St. Joe’s Chelsea ranked 20th in the Top Small Community Hospital category, while its Grand Rapids sister hospital, Mercy Health Saint Mary’s, ranked # 4 in the 15 Top Major Teaching Hospital category.

IBM Watson Health ranked 2,675 non-federal short-term acute care hospitals in the United States for its list of the Top 100 Hospitals. The hospitals that made the cut were selected based on key clinical and operational performance indicators, including survival rates, length of stay, patient ratings, operational efficiency and financial health.

For more precise comparisons, hospitals were divided into five categories and rated using a scorecard. The list of Top Performing Hospitals in 2021 was featured with higher patient ratings, lower patient mortality and fewer patient complications, faster emergency care, and lower 30-day remission rates across the hospital, the list report said.
