Hundreds rally in Dearborn to support a ‘free Palestine’ amid Israel-Gaza war ⋆

Chanting “Free, free Palestine” and “Palestine will be free” hundreds attended a rally and march in Dearborn on Saturday to support Palestinians in Gaza amid fighting between the ruling Islamic militant organization Hamas and the state of Israel.

Days after Hamas attacked Israel in a series of attacks targeting civilians, Israel declared war and has ordered 1 million residents in North Gaza to evacuate, sparking a humanitarian crisis.

The death toll has risen to more than 3,600 people. According to the Israeli Defense Force (IDF), 1,300 people have been killed in attacks on Israeli targets, and according to the Palestinian health ministry, more than 2,300 people in Gaza have been killed. At least 29 Americans have been killed.

Student organization representatives from Wayne State University, Michigan State University and University of Detroit Mercy attended the Dearborn demonstration, among others, and offered statements in support of Palestinian people.

Born Jewish and a descendent of Holocaust victims and survivors, Samir Levitt later converted to Islam and is the president of Students United for Palestine Rights at Michigan State University.

“We join together for the liberation of Palestine and hold the Zionist regime responsible for the conditions that gave rise to the violence,” Levitt said at Ford Woods Park.

Steve Conn, a veteran labor activist and former Detroit Federation of Teachers president, attended the effort and called the conflict an “Israeli racist war against Arab and Muslim people.”

“This is an international struggle against Zionist racism, what they’ve done and continue to do in the Middle East,” Conn said.
