Hammerhead swimmers compete in regional meet in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS — When the Hammerhead Swim Club has hit the road for competitions this season, they’ve made the most of the trip wherever they’ve gone.

Last weekend, the Hammerheads, who swim out of Harbor Springs, headed to Grand Rapids to compete in a USA-Michigan Swimming Regional Championship meet hosted by East Grand Rapids and again turned in a strong performance.

The day included first place finishes, state meet qualifications, team records and a strong team standing.

“It was an amazing weekend of swimming for us,” head coach Matt Pawlick said. “Almost 90 percent of our races resulted in best times. We are thrilled for our swimmers with how well they swam this weekend.”

A total of 13 teams took part in the meet, which included 300 individuals, with the Hammerheads placing first among the smaller teams in attendance, with just 18 swimmers.

A range of swimmers all the way from nine and 10 year olds to graduating seniors took part, including three seniors with the Hammerheads in Petoskey seniors Laura Pawlick and Tori Beigle and Harbor Springs senior Megan Novak. Beigle signed to swim at Calvin College at the next level last month.

“These three have been remarkable leaders for our team this season,” added Matt Pawlick. “This was a great meet for them to finish their Hammerhead careers. They are going to be missed greatly next season.”

Those earning first place finishes within the meet included Isabel Dunn in the 200 butterfly, Alyssa Glaser in the 200 breaststroke, Addy Wiers in the 100 freestyle and Maeve Riley, who won both the 200 individual medley and 200 free.

The 200 free time for Riley also came as a Hammerhead team record and Dunn set a Hammerhead record in the 100 butterfly.

The girls age 9-10 medley relay team of Riley, Parker Edgerton, Hadley Corlew and Parker Ford also earned an event win.

A number of other Hammerheads also achieved additional USA-Michigan Swimming State Meet times in Eva Rindfusz, Will Cabana, Riley, Wiers, Edgerton, Dunn and Glaser.
