Gaylord’s Luke Gelow wins GHT Player of the Week

GAYLORD — Another round of Gaylord Herald Times Player of the Week has concluded voting, and it’s time for another area athlete to receive the recognition they deserve.

This week, the leader of the Gaylord Boys Basketball team gets his shine.

The start of the 2022-23 season was a bit rough for Luke Gelow, suffering a shoulder injury during their opening night game while he struggled with the pain of the injury through their next few games.

However, since the team’s return from holiday break, the junior wing has been much more like himself; a good sign for the Blue Devils program as they head into the thick of their conference schedule.

His big week started in the first game back from break as Gaylord hosted a varsity doubleheader with St. Ignace LaSalle on Monday, January 9. After a resounding win for the girls, the boys played a thriller in the nightcap, eventually icing a 67- 65 victory for the Blue Devils’ fourth win of the year.

The end of the game was a shootout, but it was Gelow who put the finishing touches on the victory, scoring 11 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter to help put the game away.

Gaylord followed that thriller with another back-and-forth game to end the week, eventually dropping a tight one to Traverse City Central 64-61.

Still, Gelow got his, scoring 24 points while adding six rebounds and four assists in the losing effort.

His unique mix of size and athleticism makes him a tough cover for most teams they will face, giving him plenty of opportunities to match or top these performances as he gets more comfortable in the Gaylord offense.

Gaylord currently has a 5-4 overall record with all four losses coming to conference foes. They’ll have a chance to correct that margin a bit in their next two games, traveling to Alpena on Friday, Jan. 20 before another road trip to Cadillac on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

With Gelow playing at this level, seemingly no team on the Blue Devils’ schedule is unbeatable.
