‘Frida’ production returns to Detroit with original cast – Macomb Daily

Receiving sensational reviews during Michigan Opera Theater’s 2014-2015 season, “Frida” makes its triumphant return to Detroit this weekend, Feb. 26-27, at Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, 350 Madison St.

The revival of José Maria Condemi’s 2015 production — MOT’s first opera production of 2022 — is a biographical opera about Frida Kahlo’s life from age 13 through to her death, touching on her experience growing up in the era of the Mexican Revolution, a life-changing bus accident, her life with Diego Rivera—including their year in Detroit—and her successes as an artist, revolutionary, and enduring icon. The production stars Colombian soprano Catalina Cuervo as Frida Kahlo, along with original cast member Ricardo Herrera as Diego Rivera; MOT Assistant Music Director Suzanne Mallare Acton conducts. Performances are set for 7:30 pm Saturday, Feb. 26, and 2:30 pm Sunday, Feb. 27. Purchase tickets and find more information at MichiganOpera.org.
