Family remembers father of 3 killed while crossing the street on Detroit’s east side
DETROIT – A family mourns the loss of a father of three who was hit and killed while crossing a street on the east side of Detroit.
“My brother is dead. I don’t understand,” said Cadesha Tellis. “It’s difficult because we’re trying to fix everything and he has no insurance. It’s hard and I try to take it one day at a time.”
Tellis said her younger brother and father of three, 41-year-old Ivan Jones Sr., was met and killed while waking up across the street near Gratiot and Bradford avenues on Tuesday. Police said he was accidentally hit and killed by a motorcyclist.

Tellis remembered the moment she heard the news.
“I was at work but got a call to check on my brother … There was an accident on Gratiot at the store and they called to see if he was okay,” she said.
Tellis said she called her brother’s phone but he didn’t answer.
“Come to find out it was my brother, but he was hit by a motorcycle,” she said. “He was walking across the street. A semi-trailer came up on Gratiot and it was already in the middle area. He took a step back so the truck could turn, and then he was cut off from the motorcycle. “
Tellis said it was too much to take as she prepares to tell his kids that dad is gone.
“We have to look at his children regularly. You do not understand. His older kids will know he’s gone, but it will be more difficult for the younger ones. He can’t come back. He’s not coming back. This is my little brother, ”she said.
If you would like to donate for funeral expenses, the family will ask for a donation through the $ Cadesha78 Cash App.
A candlelight vigil will be held on Wilfred Street and Gratiot Avenue on Saturday, April 3 at 5 p.m.
