East Lansing publishes a survey of local residents about policing

EAST LANSING, Michigan (WILX) – Lansing-based research firm EPIC-MRA developed and conducted the survey for the city’s police force. This survey was conducted in March 2021 to examine and review the perceptions of the East Lansing Police Department by residents of East Lansing.

With this information, law enforcement agencies can improve their policies, training, and resources.

The survey is based on interviews with 500 residents from March 1st to 8th of this calendar year. Most of the interviews lasted at least 13 minutes and 50 percent were completed on cell phones.

While African Americans are overall more satisfied than dissatisfied with the overall work of the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) in providing public security services to their community, their satisfaction rate is 26 points below that of all respondents in the city. In addition, African Americans “trust” ELPD officers 45 points less than all respondents to police officers.

These questions are expected to be discussed at the Council meeting on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
