Detroit mother loses second son to gun violence in 2 years

DETROIT – A Detroit mother mourns the loss of her son who was shot dead last week on his 21st birthday.

“J’Quan was a great kid, infectious smile, loved children,” said Tia Garrett

Garrett could brag about her son J’Quan Jones all day – in addition to being an all-state-in-track at Madison Heights, he was a good person too.

He was killed in the early hours of July 6th after celebrating his birthday. The incident occurred around 1:50 a.m. in the area of East Eight Mile Road and Rex Avenue.

“Somebody decided to fire shots into that vehicle, hit and kill my kid, and take him away from me that night,” Garrett said.

Unfortunately, J’Quan was the second son to be buried in two years. Garrett’s other son, Teo Garrett, was shot dead in May 2019 at a Valero gas station on Seven Mile Road and Outer Drive because of his Cartier sunglasses.

Teo was 18 years old and on his way to Minnesota on a football scholarship.

“I don’t understand and I will never heal because I am constantly injured and in constant pain. It never ended for me, ”she said. “They are kids who got everything right in life and now they are both gone and I have no answer why.”

J’Quan’s high school and middle school friends went to Balduck Park Wednesday to release balloons in his memory.

“Teo and J’Quan were great, great kids who left behind pointless nonsense far too soon. I just wish the crime and shooting stopped in Detroit because what’s in it for them? ”Said Tia Garrett.

Detroit Police are investigating the July 6th shooting and are looking for a white SUV.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Detroit Police Department.
