Detroit big man Kelly Olynyk out at least 6 weeks with knee injury
Detroit Pistons Center / striker Kelly Olynyk is out for at least six weeks with a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee, the team said on Thursday. Olynyk injured his knee in Wednesday’s win over Houston late Wednesday when he hit his knees with Rockets rookie guard Jalen Green. The loss of Olynyk leaves the Pistons behind for two-year-old big man Isaiah Stewart.
On a team focused on developing young players like Cade Cunningham, first choice in the 2021 NBA draft, Olynyk has played 23 minutes per game as a veteran in the rotation. Olynyk, who is in his ninth season, has an average of 12.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists. If the Pistons want instant depth, they could call back G League rookie Luka Garza.
