Cheap Eats: One Stop Coney Shop offers ‘ripped’ canine, Korean corndogs in downtown Grand Rapids

We’re searching for tasty and inexpensive meals in West Michigan. When we find them, we’ll share them with you here on Cheap Eats.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Thanks to the 1999 comedy “American Pie,” Yesterdog may be Grand Rapids’ most famous hot dog joint.

But not to be outdone is another spot downtown that is also serving up unique, delicious dogs, burgers, fries and more for an extremely affordable price.

Conor and Olivia Malloy have owned One Stop Coney Shop since 2020 when they took over the operation from a couple who opened the storefront at 154 E. Fulton St. in 2009.

A longtime employee at the restaurant before taking over, Conor Malloy described his version of One Stop Coney as a fast casual joint that resembles a “new kind of mom and pop.”

“I’m here virtually every minute we’re open,” Malloy told MLive as he flipped burgers, dropped fries and dressed hot dogs from behind the counter. “This is a family-run business to the max.”

The Malloys say One Stop Coney has become a lunch destination for people downtown because they use fresh ingredients and “do little things to make food taste good.” The restaurant is busiest between 11 am and 1 pm

Among the most popular menu items are the fries, fried bologna sandwich and Korean corn dog, which people have traveled from places like Mount Pleasant, Kalamazoo and Lansing to try, Malloy said.

In addition to those specialty offerings, One Stop Coney serves up smash burgers and slew of unique hot dogs and “ripped” (deep fried) dogs. And all of it can be had for a low price.

On this trip, I ordered a couple of ripped dogs. Bacon ranch (bacon, lettuce, ranch, cheddar cheese and tomato) and BBQ (BBQ, cheddar cheese, crispy fried onions) and fries.I also picked up two types of specialty ketchup: Garlic and curry.

The entire meal, along with a drink, checked in at under $18, but one person could easily get a filling meal for about $10.

With that in mind, One Stop Coney Shop is the perfect spot for anyone in downtown Grand Rapids to walk in and get a meal. The food is fresh (and tasty) and it’s a bonus that you will likely be served by the owner himself.
