Billy Strings continued his Fall 2021 tour at The Fillmore in Detroit on Saturday in his home state of Michigan. For the birthday of the late great guitarist, Billy unveiled Duane Allman’s song “Little Martha” by the Allman Brothers Band.

Strings and Society – Mandolinist Jarrod Walker, Bass player Royal Masat and banjo players Billy fails – kicked off the show with a cover of The Original Castes “One Tin Soldier,” a song the band debuted in 2020. Staple original “Dust In A Baggie” followed before the newer original “Hellbender” from Billy’s 2021 album Renewal.

Turmoil & Tinfoil, a combination of the cover “Old Train” and the title track from Billy’s debut album from 2017, preceded another cover / original segment with two songs from Buddy Greene’s “Riding Out The Winter” and “Doin ‘Things Right” . “Billy then returned to Renewal material with” Fire Line “, which resulted in” Running The Route “. Jarrod Walker co-wrote “Show Me The Door” with violinist Christian Ward, followed by another renewal track, “The Fire On My Tongue”, to complete the first frame.

Tony Rice, written by Gordon Lightfoot, recorded “Cold On The Shoulder” and started the second set. The second train song came in the form of “Slow Train” before the renewal track “Love And Regret”. The Black Sabbath Paranoid edit “Planet Caravan” then flowed into “Hollow Heart”. “Long Forgotten Dream” would precede a cover of the Grateful Dead booklet cover “Me And My Oncle”. Next up was “New Camptown Races”, another song covered by the Grateful Dead, Johnny Cash’s “Big River”. Doc Watson’s “My Love Come Rollin ‘Down” was considered the penultimate song of the second set before Billy concluded it with “Hide And Seek,” which included an “Eye Of The Tiger” tease.

The two song encore would consist of Allman Brothers Band material, starting with the reveal of “Little Martha”. While last night marked the live debut of Billy Strings’ “Little Martha,” Billy and Jarrod shared a performance video of the tune in August 2020 on Duane Allman’s 75th birthday and is the only ABB song exclusively attributed to Duane Allman will. Billy and the band ended the evening with ABB’s “Midnight Rider”.
