Two Michigan parks named to list of best U.S. freshwater beaches
It doesn’t surprise anyone in the Great Lakes State that a leading national travel magazine included two Michigan locations on a list of the United States’ best freshwater beaches.
Fodor’s Travel this week covered Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Grand Haven State Park in an article titled “The Best Beaches in the US That Are Not Near the Ocean”.
Sleeping Bear Dunes started the list with the author of the article, who wrote of the jewel in northwest Michigan: “The sparkling clear water against a backdrop of towering golden sand dunes is a spectacular place to watch the sunset at night.”
Alluding to Grand Haven’s North Shore Beach, the article states, “It is on the quieter side of the Grand River Canal, so visitors can enjoy the same fantastic sand and calm water conditions while being far from the city away are what it feels like to have a relaxing break. “
Other beaches on the list include locations along Lake Tahoe in Nevada, the Russian River in California, Bear Lake in Idaho, and Medano Creek in Colorado.
Mike Kent, PR manager for Traverse City Tourism, said it was an honor for the region to add Sleeping Bear Dunes to the list.
“The beaches at Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore are hidden gems that really aren’t hidden anymore,” he said. “With 35 miles of shoreline along Lake Michigan and towering mountains of sand, this has become one of the hottest travel destinations in Northern Michigan.”
