Stolen car crashes into Grand Rapids constructing, driver flees

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Police are looking for a driver who fled from police in a stolen vehicle and later crashed the car into a Grand Rapids building.

The car crashed into a commercial building at Seventh Street and McReynolds Avenue NW about 3 pm Thursday, June 2.

The driver then fled the area on foot.

After the crash, Grand Rapids firefighters worked to shore up the entrance of the building because of concerns about structural damage.

Walker police Sgt. Joel Bartels said a Walker police officer initially tried to stop the car on Walker Avenue for speeding, but the vehicle sped away. The officer pursued for only a short time and then stopped because of safety concerns.

Soon after, the car crashed into the building.

Bartels said police later determined the car had been stolen out of the Kent City area.
