Shoppers and staff hide from riflemen during the shooting in Briarwood Mall on Friday

ANN ARBOR – Police are still looking for the person who opened fire on Briarwood Mall on Friday afternoon.

Police said they didn’t think the shooting was accidental.

“We all thought there was a shooter going on at the mall,” said Grace Bowlby. “So we weren’t sure if we had to run away and go through the tunnels through the back door.”

Bowlby, a student at Schoolcraft College, was working for Ann Taylor when someone opened fire at the Von Maur store on Briarwood Mall on Friday.

“We didn’t know if we had to go or how long we had to stay in place,” said Bowlby. “It was just very nerve-wracking. We didn’t know what was going on. “

She said she was in a toilet when she heard a commotion outside the door – it was her staff and a customer barricading the door.

“They blocked the doors back there and said, ‘Don’t panic, but we think there is an emergency going on,” Bowlby recalled.

Police said around 3 p.m. that a shooter shot a 19-year-old in the arm. He has been taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to be fine.

Employees and customers were scared when the police secured the mall.

“Our loss prevention man finally told us to hide in the back office, which is like a really tiny room – basically six by six feet, like a closet,” Bowlby said. “We were all sitting on the floor and on the desk in the pitch black, and I think at that point I got very scared when we moved into that back room and turned off all the lights and they said we should be quiet. “

The police are still looking for the alleged shooter. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Ann Arbor Police Department at 734-794-6920 or the appropriate authority at 734-996-8199.
