Nearly 100 flights canceled, more delayed out of Detroit Metro

Americans heading home after the holidays experienced significant disruption on New Year’s Day, including dozens of delays and cancellations to the Detroit Metro Airport.

At least 95 flights from Detroit Metro were canceled within a 24-hour period on Saturday at 5 p.m., according to flight tracking service Flight Aware. Nationally, more than 5,000 flights were canceled or delayed on Saturday. The airlines have blamed a combination of bad weather and staff shortages for the delays and cancellations that left some passengers stranded.

The journey to Chicago in particular seemed difficult for the passengers. Four evening flights were canceled from Detroit on Saturday, the Wayne County Airport Authority announced.

Cancellations could increase as winter weather worsens in the Midwest.

There could be up to 5 inches of snow overnight in southeast Michigan on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. The main snowfall is expected between Saturday 8 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m.
