Michigan’s Best Local Meals: Plate Sushi and Chicken serves bento bins, sushi rolls

ANN ARBOR, MI – Equipped with bento boxes, sushi, and affordable prices, Jane Kim is ready to feed the students.

Jane Kim, who started Totoro restaurant in Ann Arbor before selling it in 2008, recently opened Plate Sushi and Chicken. Located on 1133 Broadway Street and jointly owned by Jane Kim and Esther Kim, the restaurant aims to provide quality, affordable meals to Ann Arbor students.

The restaurant, which opened on December 10th, serves a mix of Asian and American cuisine, including chicken wings, bento boxes, and sushi.

“Our goal is an American-Asian fusion style,” said Jane Kim. “… I love American food, mixed Asian food.”

The fusions on the menu include kimchi fries and chicken wings with icings like soy garlic, sweet and spicy, and honey butter.

Plate’s menu also features a variety of bento boxes, a meal served in a segmented dish with appetizer and side dishes that Jane Kim compared to American’s brown bag lunch.

“Americans have brown bags [lunches], “She said.” In Asia we have a bento box. “

Bento boxes, which are both lunch and dinner sizes, include options like chicken teriyaki, vegetarian, sushi, and popcorn chicken. Each box comes with shrimp or vegetable tempura and a sushi roll.

Jane Kim said she wanted to make prices affordable for students in the area. Lunch bento boxes range from $ 12 to $ 14, with the sushi option reaching $ 16. Sushi rolls cost between $ 3 and $ 12, and noodle dishes cost between $ 11 and $ 15.

“Everywhere is so expensive now,” she said. “… I want to prepare good food for the students.”
