Michigan’s Best Local Meals: Cosa Sabrosa in Ann Arbor offers one-of-a-kind birria tacos

ANN ARBOR, MI – The food at Cosa Sabrosa can be summed up in three words: fresh, local and handmade.

“All of our chips come from a local tortilleria in Mexicantown. … Our products come out twice a week, ”said owner Jeff Gardner. “My mother makes the guacamole every day.”

Cosa Sabrosa, located in the Zal Gaz Grotto Club at 2070 West Stadium Boulevard, opened for the first time in 2016. Until recently, it served as both a dining restaurant and a mobile food truck. Then the pandemic paralyzed the truck.

“The pandemic was tough for us, like most restaurants,” said Gardner.

The restaurant is now in the Grotto Club and offers both take-away and take-away options.

Gardner said the restaurant, which serves a variety of Mexican dishes, was influenced by his break in the west, drawing inspiration from California and Colorado in particular.

“I didn’t really work on Mexican or Latin American concepts when I was out there, but all the incredibly talented Mexican and Latin American men and women I’ve worked with in all of the restaurants taught me so much,” Gardner said.

His favorite dishes served at the Cosa Sabrosa include birria tacos, a taco that is dipped in chilli oil and then grilled.

“I feel like we’ve become the place for Birria in Washtenaw County,” said Gardner.

Other offers include tacos – with beef, pork, fish, chicken and vegan options – nachos, agua fresca drinks and tres leches trifle.

Cosa Sabrosa is open Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday to Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
