Lansing residents hold vigil for domestic violence awareness

EAST LANSING, Michigan (WLNS) – Dozens gathered tonight at the Fenner Nature Center in Lansing for a vigil for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Not only did it serve as a reminder of the victims, but it also gave survivors a chance to share their stories.

“We want everyone to know that there are free, confidential resources available 24/7, and it just shows survivors that the community is behind them, that we are ready to do whatever we can to help them on their journey heal, and that we’re going to support them throughout the process. ”

Leah Dryer is the director of community outreach for the nonprofit End Violent Encounters, or EVE. Dryer co-hosted the event with Michigan State University’s Capital Area Response Effort and Safe Place.

The groups came together to hold the vigil with the aim of raising awareness of domestic violence and removing the stigma associated with it.

“I think October is an opportunity for us to highlight this, but it’s important to remember that survivors have these experiences and face challenges every day. And there are advocates out there who help 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ”said Rosalind Arch, director of Capital Area Response Effort.

Between the Survivor Stories and Vigil, writer Nicole Beverly also shared her experience. She says doing so helped other survivors come forward.

“It takes the stigma away from other victims who may be anxious and embarrassed and have never spoken these words before, and for them it’s an empowering moment and an opportunity to regain their power,” said Nicole Beverly, a domestic violence writer Survivors.
