Heat breaks for a cooler Tuesday

DETROIT – Good Tuesday morning!

After hot, humid weather, it is surely nice to open the windows at night and have comfortable sleeping weather! Cooler temperatures, low humidity and lots of sunshine will provide much-needed relaxation from the summer heat over the next two days.

Tuesday sunrise was at 5:56 a.m.

On our Tuesday, expect mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies with highs in the mid to late 70s. The north-northwest wind will pick up to 10 to 20 mph by noon, so it actually feels a little brisk compared to the past few days – especially in the Thumb where the highs may not go beyond the 60s today.

Tuesday sunset is at 9:12 pm

Clear skies, light wind and dry air on Tuesday evening are perfect radiation cooling conditions: A very efficient loss of surface heating during the day causes temperatures to drop almost to their maximum potential overnight. The lows in our urban heat zone will drop to nearly 50 degrees, and we will definitely see some 40s in rural areas. A north wind blows at 3 to 5 miles an hour.

Wednesday will be mostly sunny – but this time with less wind. The highs will be in the mid to late 1970s. Wednesday night will be mostly clear with lows in the low 50s.

On Thursday it will be partly cloudy and warmer, with highs in the mid-80s. The clouds will increase on Thursday night, with a late shower or thunderstorm possible. The lows will be in the mid-1960s.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely on Friday, with highs in the mid-80s, and you’ll notice more moisture in the air. We really need this rain as parts of southeast Michigan continue to experience severe drought. We keep our fingers crossed that this system will hold together and give us some widespread rain rather than killing us with isolated showers like we saw last week.

All Friday night showers should end by the crack of dawn on Saturday, with the skies getting mostly sunny by the afternoon. This is great news for rock ‘n’ rides at Royal Oak, as well as any outdoor event in June. Saturday’s highs will be in the lower 80s.

Sunday is mostly sunny to partly cloudy, with highs around 80 degrees – what a great Father’s Day! By the way, the summer solstice takes place on Sunday evening at 11:31 p.m., the official astronomical beginning of summer!
