Great Thursday, but storm threat approaches

DETROIT – Good Thursday morning!

Today’s sunrise was at 5:56 a.m.

Our Thursday starts on a great note, and it’s going to be a great day with mostly sunny skies and highs rebounding into the lower to mid 80’s. The humidity will stay low and we will have a south wind at a speed of 5 to 10 miles per hour.

Today’s sunset is at 9:12 pm

Thursday night looks great for any post-dinner plans.

Then the clouds will increase overnight and we have a chance of thunderstorms late at night.

A special type of thunderstorm cluster called the Mesoscale Convection System (MSC) that will develop west of Michigan on Thursday night and then traverse east or east-southeast. Three out of four high-resolution computer models suggest that south of the state line has the best potential for severe weather – primarily noxious gusts of wind – but that remains a very close question, so I strongly recommend that you make sure your weather radio is up before you go to bed – especially if you are south of the M-59 / Hall Road / Highland Road.

Temperatures on Thursday night will not fall until the mid-1960s as the humidity rises again. A south wind blows at 5 to 10 miles an hour.

As soon as the showers and thunderstorms stop on Friday morning, we take a break with partly cloudy skies. It gets noticeably humid which, along with highs from the mid to late 80s, means an uncomfortable day for those without air conditioning.

A cold front is approaching Friday evening, so that isolated thunderstorms appear late on Friday afternoon and last until Friday evening. There remains some uncertainty about the serious threat posed by these storms, as some meteorological parameters strongly favor strong storms but some factors speak against it. The upper air data from Friday morning as well as a better estimate of the front timing will help pin this down. It is therefore advisable to regularly check our app’s real-time radar if you have outdoor plans from Friday to Friday evening.

The storms should end before dawn on Saturday, with lows in the mid-60s … but it will take a while to reach that temperature as the humidity lingers for at least the first half of Friday night, if not longer.

As long as this cold front moves through Friday night, Saturday should be partly cloudy to mostly sunny, with less humidity and highs in the mid-80s – what a day for the June celebrations, Father’s Day weekend and the Rock ‘n’ Rides in Royal Oak !

Saturday night will be mostly clear with pleasant lows in the upper 50s.

On Sunday, Father’s Day, it is mostly sunny to partly cloudy with highs in the mid to late 80s. During the day a warm front will move over the area and I do not expect rain at the moment. But you know what I always say: never trust a warm front.

I will watch the situation. Stay tuned!
