Kim Hagerty, former Hagerty co-CEO and chairman of the board and longtime Traverse City philanthropist, died at home on Wednesday after an accidental fall.

Hagerty, 64, “took off for the worse” and died with his family on Wednesday after being rushed to Munson Medical Center after falling over the weekend, an email to Hagerty employees revealed. “While this is an extremely sad moment for us, we are always grateful and proud of Kim for her contribution to Hagerty and her influence in our local community,” the email read. “Kim was an avid collector of cars and boats and is pictured here with her ’57 Thunderbird, Pinky … thanks for your thoughts, prayers and support. We will all miss Kim very much.”

A statement by Hagerty Company to The Ticker highlighted Kim Hagerty’s contributions to the organization in over 15 years after quitting a successful legal career in 1996 to return to Traverse City and work for her family’s insurance company. Wife and friend Kim has been an integral part of Hagerty’s growth, “the statement said.” During her tenure with the company, Kim served in a variety of roles including legal advisor, co-CEO and most recently chairman of the board before retiring in 2014 . After retiring, Kim remained a passionate and active associate of Hagerty and a community benefactor, most recently with her husband, Antonio Simão, in donating $ 1 million to Northwestern Michigan College. During this difficult time, data protection is requested on behalf of the family.

Hagerty was a longtime philanthropist and supporter of various nonprofits and causes in Traverse City. The $ 1 million contribution Hagerty and Simão made to Northwestern Michigan College that year will be used for scholarships and the college’s unrestricted fund. Hagerty and Simão donated a portion of their donation to the Hagerty-Simão Family Scholarship Fund, which awards approximately 20 student scholarships annually, preferably those enrolled in NMC’s Aviation Program or Commitment Scholarship Program. The annual scholarships are available to students as an endowment scholarship fund.
