Former Detroit nurse charged with swapping pain reliever in vials, syringes with another liquid

DETROIT – A Ypsilanti woman swapped out pain relievers in vials and syringes and replaced them with a different liquid while she was working as a nurse in Detroit, officials said.

Mary Cheatham, 41, of Ypsilanti, is accused of tampering with ampules and syringes of hydromorphone that she knew should be given to ICU patients for pain relief.

Officials said Cheatham removed the hydromorphone and replaced it with another liquid before returning the vials and syringes, knowing they would be given to patients.

At the time, Cheatham was working as a licensed nurse at DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital, officials said.

“To protect the health and safety of our citizens, we take such crimes seriously and will not hesitate to prosecute health care workers whose drug theft puts patients at risk,” said Acting US Attorney Saima Mohsin.
