Detroit, Livonia, Michigan State police investigate shooting that closed stretch of I-96

DETROIT – A section of I-96 on the west side of Detroit was closed for a few hours on Sunday due to an investigation into a gunfight.

The eastbound lanes of I-96 between Evergreen Road and Outer Drive were closed until about 5 p.m.

Michigan State Police officers were dispatched to the area shortly after 3 p.m. following reports of a shooting, according to the Detroit Police Department. When they got there, police said they found three inmates in a vehicle – one was shot in the chest.

The rescue service was called and the eastward lanes of the motorway were closed.

Police said the other occupants of the vehicle had an argument with someone near the intersection of Plymouth and Middlebelt streets in Livonia. Police said shots were fired from an unidentified vehicle near Inkster Road as they were leaving the area.

The investigation is still ongoing.
